Over the years Ms Behrtel has built up an exceptional reputation for the quality of her training events, CPD talks, articles written (on request) for medical publications, and drafting and managing contracts for various entities in the healthcare industry.
Ms Behrtel is a member of the SAMA Research Ethics Committee and also the moderator for the Advanced Medical Ethics Course offered by the Foundation for Professional Development. She is also a full member of the Ethics Institute of SA.
Her main fields of interest include health policy, law and ethics, organisational and business ethics, compliance and corporate governance, clinical research ethics, providing training in all aspects of compliance with health law and ethics, drafting national and international agreements for companies and organisations in the healthcare industry, and preparing submissions, legal opinions and summaries of proposed changes in health policy, law and ethics.
Ms Behrtel obtained the BLC and LLB degrees at the University of Pretoria. She subsequently obtained a Certificate in Medicine and Law (cum laude) at the Unit for Medicine and Law, a joint initiative by UNISA and the University of Pretoria, a Certificate in Legislative Drafting (cum laude) at the University of Pretoria, as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in International Research Ethics (cum laude) at the University of Cape Town
Ms Behrtel is an experienced public speaker with more than 13 years’ experience in the training of healthcare professionals (and non-professionals / support staff) and doing presentations at various conferences, congresses, symposia and seminars on numerous topics related to health law, ethics and compliance.
She commenced her career as a researcher in the Professional Affairs Department of the Law Societies of SA, where after she joined the South African Nursing Council as legal assistant to the Registrar and was shortly thereafter promoted to Senior Manager: Professional Conduct (a new department established within SANC). Ms Behrtel subsequently served in the South African Military Health Service as a Senior Military Law Officer (specialising in medico-legal matters and contracts).
During her articles of clerkship at Norton Rose Fulbright Inc (then Deneys Reitz Inc) as a candidate attorney, she specialised in personal injury and insurance litigation. Ms Behrtel later joined the SA Law Reform Commission as a Senior State Law Advisor and in March 2008 was appointed as the Head of the Human Rights, Law and Ethics Unit at the South African Medical Association (SAMA). In her career to date, Ms Behrtel has gained in excess of 15 years’ experience at senior management level.
Ms Behrtel previously held the position of Head of Legal at Chalcid (Pty) Ltd where she was responsible for the management of all medico-legal consulting services, especially matters relating to personal injury claims, medical malpractice insurance and medico-legal audits. In addition, she is the internal ethics and compliance officer for Chalcid (Pty) Ltd, Natmed Micawber (Pty) Ltd and National Medical Financial Services (Pty) Ltd, responsible for all legal and regulatory compliance and corporate governance. From 16 February 2015, Ms Behrtel has again been practicing as a private health law and ethics consultant.
